Big Companies, Recruitment, and Social Media

By Arifa Chowdury, Career Assistant (Work Study student)

The amount of time that people spend on their phones daily is astonishing. Considering how much time is spent checking social networks, it’s no surprise that Canadian businesses are becoming increasingly active on media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit etc. Companies now tap into social media to reach customers, and are using these social networking sites for customer service, sales and recruiting.

As a Business Management student, I aspire to work for one of the four big accounting firms or a major corporation in Canada. Reaching out to these companies may seem far-fetched for us, but little do we realize that these companies have built strategies, and are constantly upgrading them to reach out to talented candidates via social media.

In this blog, I’m going to walk you through the various methods by which big companies recruit via social media.

You Can Be An Entrepreneur If You Set Your Mind To It: Part 2

In Part 1, we talked about how to get to conceive an idea – but you might wonder…

Taking Your First Steps and Getting Support

Not only is it important to have a great idea, being able to take action and to execute it, is equally, if not more important when launching a startup. When you’re taking your first steps towards starting your own business, keep in mind that the goal of starting something is to show that you’re able to make a profit (no matter how big or small) out of something that you’ve created or to solve a problem that exists. From there, you can either scale up on your existing idea or apply the knowledge that you’ve gained towards better ideas.

‘Bounce Back’ on your academics with Effective Study Strategies

By Jenna Lam, Academic Assistant (Work Study student)

Happy New Year! Welcome back to starting a new semester at UTSC!

The start of a new semester is always exciting – it’s your chance to take everything you’ve learned about studying and bringing it with you into your new courses. Speaking of studying, when was the last time you took a moment to pause your studying – to check-in, evaluate, and re-think your studying strategy? At first, it may feel counter-intuitive… why should I give up any more precious time to re-plan my studying, if I can just continue going full-charge at my textbook? It turns out that studying is more than just memorizing what we need. Studying is a skill like any other – one that can be refined, re-strategized, and re-thought!
