Gearing Up for Classes in September!

By Tharchika Sathiaseelan, Academic Assistant

It feels like it was just yesterday when I completed my last exam and was ready for the start of summer! The start of the new academic year is right around the corner. I hope everyone is having a great summer and are slowly changing gears to prepare for this September.

Whether you’re ready or not, I have prepared a quick list to ensure you set yourself up for success this school year:

Review Your Courses
At this point, I hope most of you have at least started your course enrolment, and have hopefully gotten into most of your courses. If you haven’t started this process, please ensure you do so as soon as possible.

Momentarily, many of you are probably waitlisted for certain courses.  I still remember my second year when I was waitlisted for two of my mandatory science courses and was panicking!  I met with an Academic & Learning Strategist at the Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC), and they helped me plan my courses accordingly. So if you’re on the waitlist, don’t panic! However, definitely be mindful of important academic deadlines including the last day to remain on waitlist and the last day to make adjustments to your courses – these dates are mentioned at the end of my blog.
At this time, I strongly recommend meeting with a staff member here to help you develop a parallel plan and start thinking about an alternative course, in the event you don’t get in to the course of preference - it never hurts to be over prepared. I also recommend checking ACORN daily to see your status on the waitlist.  Furthermore, review the Course Calendar to see if there are any other course(s) you can take.

Familiarize Yourself with the Campus and its Resources
Whether you’re an incoming student or returning student, it’s always best to be prepared.  It may seem straightforward, but make sure you know where your classes are in advance!  Use the UTSC Campus Map to familiarize yourself or download like the UTSC Mobile App which also includes bus tracking and route information!

This is also a great time to get familiar with the numerous resources that UTSC offers such as:
-       Health & Wellness Centre

These are just a few I’ve highlighted.  For more, please visit the A-Z directory for a list of all available on-campus resources and helpful websites.

Getting Back to School Mode
If you’re looking to further your preparedness for September, we have countless number of tip sheets  from both the Academic and Career side, which can be found here.  Book a Study Skills Appointment with our very knowledgeable Academic & Learning Strategists.

Enjoy the Remaining Weeks of September
Sadly, there are only a few more weeks left before we revisit our books and return back to our busy schedules. It is often important to take some time off for ourselves. We often neglect our health, and personal care, but an important factor in ensuring you all have successful academic year!  Enjoy the summer while it lasts and I would like to wish everyone a successful 2017-2018 academic year. For tips on Self Care, please visit my colleague, Hira Ali's blog, which can be accessible here: utscaacc.blogspot.com/2017/08/self-care-and-its-importance.html
