Choosing Your Program and Summer Courses

By Amy Wang, Academic Assistant

With April soon approaching, I want to make sure that all students expecting to complete 4.0 credits declare a program of study on ACORN soon. This may sound daunting, but don't worry, we'll be with you step by step to figure it out.

What Program Should I Choose?

Before we jump straight into dates and deadlines, it's important that we ask ourselves a couple of questions first to establish what we're interested and passionate about. This will help you greatly towards choosing the right program.

  1. What am I interested in? Are you passionate about learning about the human brain? Perhaps you'll want to look into studying Neuroscience. Maybe you're interested in solving social issues. In that case, you may want to look into Sociology. Having a good understanding of what courses or areas of study that perk your interests will help you choose a program that you'll enjoy.
  2. What courses have I done well in? If you're not sure what you're interested in, taking a look at what courses you've done well in so far (from either high school or University) may help you figure this out. Knowing your strengths may help you understand what you do well in.
  3. What career paths may I pursue with the program I choose? This is a really important question to consider when you're thinking of what program to choose. If you're not sure of what career paths are related to your program, or what career path you're interested in, come to the AA&CC to speak with a Career Counselor. Doing some research on your own time is also highly recommended!

When and How Should I Choose my Program?

Once you've thought about a general area of study, you'll want to take a look at the calendar to see the different types of programs UTSC offers. There are three program combinations you'll want to be aware of:

  1. 1 Specialist
  2. 2 Majors
  3. 1 Major + 2 Minors

It's important to be aware that some programs are limited and some are unlimited. You can enrol in unlimited programs at any time, however, limited programs require an application and have deadlines on when you can enrol (please see below).

Details on which programs are limited or unlimited can be found on the Office of the Registrar's website here:

Summer Courses

If you still have enrollment requirements you need for a program you want to enrol in and are unable to complete them by the first application cycle, then taking summer courses may be the solution for you!

Students may apply for a program of their choice while simultaneously taking courses! You can be eligible to apply for the second application cycle!

Summer Course Enrolment begins next week, April 6th! Don't forget to view your Start Time on April 2nd, as per the Summer 2018 Registrar's Guide which can be found here: https://utsc.utoronto.ca/registrar/sites/utsc.utoronto.ca.registrar/files/resource-files/Registrar%27s%20Guide%20Summer%202018C_0.pdf

So what if a course you need to take is not offered at UTSC? Another option would be looking into taking the course at another campus. For details on how to take courses at another campus, you can check out the information here: http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/registrar/courses-other-campuses.

You must seek permission from your Program Supervisor to take courses for your program requirements at another campus, so make sure to reach out to them!

As always, if you ever have any questions on course planning and making sure you're on the right track, don't hesitate to stop by the AA&CC to speak with an advisor!

Wishing you all the best,

Amy Wang
